Minnesota AG Keith Ellison will be leading prosecution against ex-cop Kim Potter
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is all set to be the lead prosecutor in the case against Kim Potter, who was a Brooklyn Center police officer who shot Daunte Wright at a traffic stop one month ago.
Previously, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office was handling this case. However, Ellison was asked to take over instead. Ellison stated that Daunte Wright was a son, a brother, a father, a friend and he undertook this prosecution of not taking the case lightly. He also added that he has complete confidence in the way in which County Attorney Orput and County Attorney Freeman handled the case and he expressed his gratitude to them for what the office has done.
Right now, Potter is facing a second-degree manslaughter charge in relation to the fatal shooting. This week began with a judge setting a tentative trial date for her on Dec. 6.
Ellison added that Minnesota is back experiencing a moment associated with force encounter with police resulting in death. He also added that in case prosecutors make sure that prosecutions are swift and legislators at each level pass reforms long-overdue and there is no scope for police leadership misconduct, it will be possible to cease this particular cycle of history to create new justice standards.
April 11 saw Wright getting pulled over due to an expired registration on his vehicle. Then, officers saw that he hung air fresheners on his mirror, violating another rule. Then, the authorities learned that there was an outstanding warrant for the young man and tried to handcuff him. However, he tried to reenter his vehicle. At this point, Potter discharged her firearm and Wright was shot in the chest. She claimed that she wanted to shoot her taser.
