Nicko Journey is a hidden gem
I love the art of music. Whatever genre or sub-genre it may be. It can also be overwhelming at times due to different forms and so many artists releasing music daily. I came across an artist by the name of Yannick Magaço who goes by Nicko Journey, and I must tell you he’s a special type of artist with a profound talent.
Nicko was born and raised in Maputo, Mozambique and I had to do my research to see where that’s exactly located. (Maputo, capital of East Africa’s Mozambique, is an Indian Ocean port with preserved Portuguese colonial architecture.) Learning a little more about him, he moved to Australia for a few years and eventually moved back to his birth nation. He developed a love for writing from Poetry/lyrical composition.
He was in college pursuing a business degree but ultimately decided to quit that degree and move to San Francisco to study screenwriting.
Now we’re here. After releasing a handful of singles, on June 30th he dropped his debut album The Art Salesman. A self-motivating body of work and intro into the mind of a creative and determined young talent. “I chose this title because of my frustrations as a creator,” Nicko explained. From start to finish I would say this album is like an audio book.
At 20-tracks, the project includes one feature and a few interludes to let you catch your breathe and take in all the gems Nicko is spitting. I love when you get reeled in and can relate on a multitude of levels. You are not confined to just one type of sound, versatile is writing all over these tracks. A true music lover would definitely enjoy this album.
His switch up between his vocals and rapping is another thing to take note of. “Farewell, My One True Love” is one of the tracks that showcases those abilities and also one of the more emotive records on the project. “Tony Danza” is probably one of my favorite cuts. It’s just one those records that turns you up and showcases Nicko’s unmatched flow.
The Art Salesman is one of the most complete albums I’ve heard so far this year. It’s a little bit of everything on here. It’s just a matter of time before Nicko’s music hits the billboards.
