Inland Empire artist MillsWasChosen talks new project and more

Hip Hop is the most popular genre to date. The cool thing is that Hip Hop is so diverse and you get to learn many artists backgrounds and understand why or how they do what they do.

MillsWasChosen (born Jaylon Mills) is a 23 year old artist, producer and engineer out of the Inland Empire. He’s been making music since the age of 9 and attended The Art Institute – Inland Empire for audio engineering. All of his most recent projects – Stay Tuned 2, Letter L, and Strictly For The West and his newly released tape Stay Tuned 3 are available on all major streaming platforms.

“My older brother was a producer so he would always bring local recording artist to our house. I met NFL star Marvin Jones, he used to record at my house. Being in that environment seeing how everything worked made me want to rap.”

He wasn’t really committed to music until his senior year of high school but at the time he was just producing and engineering. In 2014 is when he began making music with a handful of IE artists such as Young Ceno, Tru Carr, Cali Stackz, Duda and more.

With each release his confidence level and lyrical skillset elevates. He took his time with each track on Stay Tuned 3, in which he was working on for 6 months. “One of the most creative process I’ve ever went through. With
every song, I challenged myself to go back in and make it better somehow.”

When I asked what was his favorite track, he said it changes everyday but “Deeper Than Rap” is his favorite right now. “I made that song about the moment I’m at in my life and reminiscing on my homies I wish could celebrate it with me but can’t because they’re either dead or in jail.”

Every artist has their own method, some write and some just go in the booth and everything comes together. For Mills, he loves to write he explained but for this project he didn’t pick up a pen once, he just played the beat, said a prayer and God guided him the rest of the way.

Michael Jackson being one of his biggest influences, he strives to reach his highest potential and keep serving grade A music.

“You’re going to see a lot of BIG announcements from me this year. Definitely have some shows and merch on the way. More singles. A lot of visuals. Last but not least, I have a billboard in New York going up in March.”
