Man inaccurately convicted of murder proven innocent

A man based in Houston man, who in 2010, was wrongfully convicted of a murder was cleared of the crime by the highest criminal court of Texas. According to reports, once DNA was discovered at the scene, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals stated that Lydell Grant was “actually innocent.” 

In the year 2010, stab wounds were sustained by 28-year-old Aaron Scheerhoorn outside a Montrose, Houston bar. In his murder trial, six bystanders testified against Grant, and in 2012, he was found guilty. Initially, he was sentenced to life. However, retesting of the DNA discovered at the scene was done using advanced technology, and the investigators were led to one more man. Eventually, Grant has been released from jail. 

Jermarico Carter has been taken into custody in relation to Scheerhoorn’s death. According to reports, he confessed to the killing and right now, he remains in prison awaiting trial.   

Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg stated that it is as important to exonerate innocent people, as it is to catch guilty ones. He stated that the greatest responsibility of a prosecutor is to ensure justice. Though Grant enjoyed his freedom, he also waited for his exoneration for many years after release. Grant stated that if anything, he learned patience when in prison. He added that whatever is planned by judicial system won’t work if it is not right. After the announcement made by the court, he heaved a sigh of relief and thanked god, stating that he was concerned about dying in jail. After this ruling by Texas’ appeals court, it is now possible for Grant to apply for $80,000 in state compensation for each year he was behind bars.
