Daunte Wright’s death is a murder declared according to medical examiners

The demonstrations in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, were renewed for a second day after Daunte Wright, a twenty-year-old Black man, was shot and killed by Police. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner made the announcement on 12th of April Monday, stating that Wright had been shot in the chest and found dead from that injury.

Since the report ruled that this manner of death was accidental, the medical examiner did not contend that the person’s mental state played a role in the ruling.

On Monday, Police released body-worn camera footage from the shooting. Wright was stopped for driving an SUV with old license plates and is accused of violating Minnesota’s mirror-hanging law.

In a press conference on Monday, police Chief Gannon said that the Police had stopped him for having an expired registration on his car. Once the officer arrived, he spotted something attached to the rearview mirror.

When Police later discovered that he had an outstanding warrant, they arrested him. In the footage, Police Officer is saying, “Taser! Taser!”  Instead of firing the Taser rounds, the officer opened fire on him. In the footage, the officer can be heard saying, “Holy shit, I just shot him.”

The chief announced that the incident was “an accidental discharge.”

As I watch the video, I believe the officer meant to deploy their Taser but accidentally shot him.

He went on to say this appears to have been a negligent discharge that led to Mr. Wright’s death.

Only a year and a few miles from where Derek Chauvin is on trial for killing George, it is distressing that a third similar shooting has occurred. The MPD [Minneapolis Police Department] has confirmed that Wright’s fatal shooting is being investigated by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
