Artist Spotlight: Young Go Talks New Project, The West Coast Music Scene And More
Home to the famous Forum and brand new Sofi Stadium, Inglewood CA has given birth to West Coast legends and continues to birth rising stars. Rap veteran Young Go is putting on for his city and has recently released a new project, No Cosign, Vol. 2 to complete his 2020 stint.
The project comprises of 13 tracks with the lead single being “Sittin’ Inda Bank” which also has visual treatment. It’s deeper than rap for Young Go and he motivates the streets through his music with introspection and lyrical prowess that’s relatable. Each track reflects a piece of his life and his drive to continue along his journey. Long Beach rapper DW Flame is the lone feature on the project so you soak up all the game and talent that Young Go possesses.

Tell us a little about yourself and when you started your music career?
My stage name is Young Go, I’m polynesian, specifically Tongan-American from Inglewood, Ca. Been expressing myself creatively since I was a kid but started making music seriously since 2006. I make hip-hop music a mix between rap, r&b, reggae, soul and other genres. I’m really a mixture of all the music and art I was exposed to growing up.
We are nearing the end of a crazy year, any valuable lessons you’ve learned that will influence your mindset going into 2021?
To stay consistent and never listen to the side conversations, if it’s not meant to grow or progress you and your dreams, don’t give it any energy. Also, staying down solid cause pursuing your dreams and passions is gonna have a lot of ups and downs, but stay diligent, it will eventually pay off.
What song would you tell someone to listen to if they were hearing your music for the first time?
I have a lot of great songs, but if you want to get an idea of my range listen to Sittin Inda Bank, that’s my latest single of my upcoming mixtape No Cosign Volume 2.
How would you describe your sound?
My sound is a mixture of all my hip-hop influences. I’m the new era of westcoast gangsta rap with a g-funk twist and careful attention to bars and dropping knowledge.
Do you have a specific method or process when putting your music together?
I have to be inspired by an idea or a beat and once I have that the music just pours out of me. I like having anywhere from 3 to 10 songs written and ready to go and once I hit the studio I turn up and lay everything down.
Tell us about your mixtape, “No Cosign Vol 2” and what we should take away from the project?
It’s some of my best work, I am still developing as an artist and songwriter and I wanted to showcase that. I also wanted to continue to build on the idea that you don’t need a “cosign” to make it, if you are concerned about fame maybe a cosign is necessary but I’m worried about the art and making money. Not to downplay getting or having a cosign, but just people to know you can get anything you want if you work hard for it and stay consistent.

It changes everyday, but today I would say Bottom Up, Closer and Ghetto Symphony.
What is a go-to food spot in Inglewood?
To be politically correct because of my section, I would say Yoshinoya, but growing up I always went to Melo burger, it’s on the border line of Inglewood and Lennox.
What is your take on the current West Coast music scene?
The westcoast is having another resurgence, especially in the latino, asian and polynesian scene. But hip-hop on the westcoast period is doing well. The west coast is on top of the rap game with Roddy, Ty Dolla Sign, Yg and others. On top of battle rap with Geechi, Rum Nitty, B dot, and Danny Myers. The underground scene with Drakeo now out, Bino, Blast all the rappers from the Crenshaw District, the hip-hop scene here in Inglewood is thriving too with Rucci and others from the Red sections of Inglewood. Then there’s the Long Beach hip-hop scene as well with DW Flame, Savii, Stupid Young and Rado Boy. And there’s a lot of upcoming polynesians, like Yung Lb, myself, Phatboyy, Sefa, CutthroatMode, CeeFoe, Neition, Maka T, Stunna June, Cuhraig. Can’t forget about Northern California, Utah, Arizona, Washington State, Oregon, Hawaii and Alaska as well. Man I’ll be listing artists all day, but it’s all love. Overall, it’s in a good place and a lot of people getting money, generating wealth and working together and building.
What can we look forward to from you musically going into the next year and any final thoughts?
Ya’ll check No Cosign Volume 1 and 2 and you will see the growth and progress. Next year me and my team plan to turn it up and get more content out and keep building up our brand and expanding our business. We hope things open up so we can do a tour or at least do some shows and keep building. Just gonna keep doing what’s gotten me this far but level up and just keep making great music.
